Title: Games
Post by: Larknight on June 16, 2018, 05:16:18 AM
I just bought a new laptop! it is the best one I have bought so far, spent double what I normally do. Now I want to play a game, I am burned out on retail WoW and waiting for classic to be released, what games could I do in the mean time? any ones that allow me to try it before I buy it to make sure that I like it?

What sort of game are you looking for?

FPS, RPG, Strategy?  Single player or multiplayer?

I've got a ton of suggestions but it all depends what sort of genre you're looking for and if you're feeling antisocial or not.   :-)

One suggestion I can make right off the bat because you can play it offline and online, and it gives you a free trial, is Shroud of the Avatar, Richard Garriott's new game.  I think it's great.  (However I'm biased as I'm a huge Richard Garriott fan and I worked for him on that game, writing around 20 in-game music tracks including one of the main theme songs)

If that's not your cup of tea, let me know and I'll cheerfully vend up some other options.  I also can suggest some really nice older games if you're looking for a more retro direction.

If you decide you like it, let me know your name in-game!  Mine is "Jarrod Kailef".

The game is definitely not easy - Takes some focus to get the hang of everything, but I think that's what makes the game so much fun.  Things aren't really spoon fed to you and once you get the hang of things it really makes you feel like you're accomplishing things, versus just following arrows to each of your destinations.

Wow, you still playing Shroud?  How's the game going? Is it released yet?

Yup, still playing, albeit not as often.  (I don't play games in general as often as I used to)  It's officially released, and the three questlines are complete and reasonably fun.  I still don't like combat very much, but I like everything else.  Which is stupid because, you know, it's an MMO, so combat is kind of central to the experience.  But, it's better than it was before, and it generally improves with every monthly release.

I so want to get into SotA. I love the idea of it anyway. I just don't see it as a beginner friendly experience at this point. Am I wrong in thinking that, Kailef?

Maybe.  I say maybe because, I know that Portalarium significantly improved the new player experience with a totally new starting area and questline that helps you learn the ropes.

That said, I haven't actually seen or played through the new starter stuff because I've had a character for years.  The last time I redid the starter quest was before the world became persistent which was (I think) two years ago.

I think that perhaps I will create a new account and give the full new player experience a try, so I can (1) better answer your question, and (2) be able to help new players out more effectively since I'll understand what they've seen and haven't seen.

In entirely unrelated news, Crites, I have the utmost confidence that I haven't seen you around here before.  Welcome!  Do I know you from somewhere, or did you just happen upon us by chance?

I still haven't had a chance to play, been too busy with real life stuff. Hopefully I will get to soon.
