Title: New Site Configuration
Post by: Kailef on June 28, 2013, 09:53:39 PM
I've decided to eliminate the insanely old front end for the website and integrate a little CMS as the front page of the PIF site.  I think it makes us look a bit more professional, and it makes everything a little (a lot, rather) easier to edit and modify from an administrative standpoint.

How does it look to you guys?

Need some time to get used to it.

The forums themselves are identical to what they were before, I've just removed the old "frame" will all the functions that didn't work and/or nobody ever used.  I also had to change the forum theme because with the new front page CMS system, the old theme didn't work properly.  This theme isn't my favorite either - I'm going to try and find another one that's a little cleaner with better coloring.

Okay!  The new site has been completely configured.  Update to SMF, addition of a front page content management system...  I even busted out my graphic design "skills" and made a new logo for us that matches the color scheme.  At least, I think it matches the color scheme.... Of course, I'm colorblind, so....  Um....

Somebody tell me, does the new logo match the color scheme?

Anyhow, the site was starting to look a little bit dated, and I wanted to prepare us for the future when we all fasten ourselves onto a new game to play.  (Personally, I'm batting for Shroud of the Avatar)  Although I have to say, Asheron's Call 2 is a heck of a lot of fun when everything is working properly!  I'm really glad that they relaunched the game.

Yep, like the logo.  The tagline font is very nice, as is the shading in the background of the title.  Or is that schmutz on my glasses...hmm...

The site blew up on my Firefox browser, at least the front page.  Looks like it pulled up the cached version instead of running the new stuff.  Will clear the cache and try again....<goes to play>....yeah, that was it, looks fine now.

It's fine on Chrome, too.

A tad space-war-ish for my taste, and there's a lot of fonts in play.  But that's all quibbly, it's a nice update all in all.

It does look a smidgen high tech, but I really like the clean lines, you know what I mean?  I'm glad you like it.  I was really challenged with regard to making a logo, I kind of suck at that sort of thing.  But, I think it ended up looking good.

A1,

It's been updated again since the point I asked this question - Switched to SMF 2.x instead of SMF1.x, and I'm using a new layout and theme.  I think it's much nicer than the halfway point we were at before.

In fact, if I do say so myself, it looks pretty freaking awesome.  *chuckle*

You'll find that link at the very top right next to your avatar.  If for some reason the top panel is collapsed , you won't see your avatar or the links.  Click the little triangle to the left of the "home" button to expand the header and next to your avatar there will be a "show unread posts since your last visit" button.

Personally, that's where I start off:  I have the page http://www.wowguild.com/smf/index.php?action=unread;all;start=0 bookmarked instead of the front page becuase it jumps me directly to the unread posts.

I'm definitely liking it, too.  Being able to add news without jumping through hoops, being able to add a video, and having the CMS integrated - Very nice.  Plus, I really like the Helios forum look.  Makes us look a lot more professional than we did before.

I wasn't sure when you changed it Kai. However, it is growing on me. The simplicity of the look is very refreshing.

As with any upgrade, they are mostly under-appreciated.

Nice work, especially in preserving all the content.

Thanks, Abner.  I really wanted to make sure we didn't lose our accounts and all the previous content, which is where all the difficulty came from, as I'm sure you understand.  Setting up a new forum and CMS isn't all that hard, but migrating to a new platform and taking all the old stuff with you, that's no fun at all.

The old content, though, is part of our history and culture as a guild.  I regret all the time that the previous several forum interations weren't able to be preserved.  We've still got the last ten years, though.  (The older stuff, from our old TEEMZ forum and such, has been gone for years)
