Ventrilo question
« on: March 29, 2015, 07:28:26 PM »
I'm coming off of TeamSpeak, so I'm still learning my way around Ventrilo. I like that it is far more compact, but I'm having an issue.  Today, when I was running it and NeverWinter, I noticed that it didn't register my push-to-talk key while NeverWinter was the primary window.  TeamSpeak and Mumble both did that automatically, as does Skype, but I couldn't figure it out in Ventrilo.  What checkbox did I miss?

Usually that means that you either want to check (or uncheck) the "Use Direct Input to detect Hotkey" checkbox, found in the "Setup" section.  (And possibly, if unchecked, check "Discard Hotkey" if it's misbehaving.

So, after a bit of Ventrilo with Kyle, I'm not totally sold on it.  Have we looked into Skype as a general hangout option?

Thanks Kai.  Your fix worked, btw.

We're not married to Ventrilo, although I do like it a lot better than Mumble and Teamspeak, because it's much less resource-intensive from a CPU standpoint.  Is it doing the job for you, at the very least?

Well, it could be that I'm still learning my way through the software.  Like you pointed out, it is efficient. I think I'm going to miss the ability to change the level of just a single user.  Am I missing how to do that and just being software-dumb, and need to rtfm?

Easy to do, but slightly non-intuitive until you know the software.

Basically you right-click the user you want, pick 'miscellaneous', then pick 'special effects'.  Then you choose the "Volume" item and add it to that user, and use the slider to raise or lower that person's volume level as you choose.

Here's a crummy guide I found:  http://www.dacharts.com/faq/Ventrilo-user-indiv-vol-control.htm

My favorite place to learn how to configure and use Ventrilo features is right before or during a raid.

I suggest that you're giving yourself far too much time, and are having trouble because you're not under enough pressure and nobody is yelling at you.

I've been using a Teamspeak server several times over the past few weeks and from my perspective, the user GUI is FAR more straightforward and easy to use than Ventrillo.  And Voice-activated speech is The Cat's Meow.  No fooling around with a talk-to-speak key -- I'm in love.

We could very easily switch over to using Teamspeak.  I use that with several other groups, in fact.  Alternatively, we could switch to using Mumble which is simple and pretty easy on the CPU.  Ventrilo is weird, and I've basically kept using it because "that's what we've always had", and not for any actual "good" reason.
