Since my only mage is a level 29 bank toon which has not completed a quest in over two years, I will refrain from any attempts at advice on this topic.  Sorry.

My suggestion would be to NOT play a mage.

Or as I like to call them... Meh-age.

ps... Warlocks rule!!

Flamethrowers are proof that somewhere, sometime, someone thought to themselves "You see those people over there? I sure would like to set them on fire, I'm just not close enough to get the job done."

Well, I haven't bothered to do any research per se, since it won't really stay exactly the same between now and 85, in all likelihood. However, it seems to me that Fire is currently best for sustained PvE roles (i.e. raiding and heroics) and Frost is well-suited for PvP. Arcane still has the highest burst damage, from what I can tell, but I am biased against Arcane in every way. All three specs right now, however, are relatively competitive, so I would suggest doing what is fun, at least for the next 2-2.5 weeks before Cataclysm ships.
Chertygirl - 80 mage
Thalex - 80 druid
Warrbird - 80 warrior (currently Horde side)
Bladebird - 80 rogue
Holybird - 80 pally
Deathbird - 80 unholy dk of doom (and stuff)
Darkthalex - 80 warlock
Saidyn - 80 hunter
Onslot - 80 shammy
Aphrodytie - 80 priest

Fire is now the best raiding spec. But i am thoroughly enjoying my frost mage.

here are some specs;

I am lost. I have gone to look for myself. If I return before I get back, please ask me to wait.
