Cataclysm Jump Start Tips
« on: November 05, 2010, 04:50:04 PM »
I'm going to post an overview of the things I've been preparing for myself as Cataclysm approaches in order to get a jump start on leveling, etc.

Between now and approximately Dec 3rd, make sufficient progress in the argent tourney that my toon(s) can pick up 12 different daily quests there.  This requires having champion status with at least one faction and valiant status with another. If you've gone so far as to become champion for all factions, I'm not sure if that reduces the number of dailies you can get.

Around the 3rd to 5th of Dec, complete all the tournament and Sons of Hodir dailies and HOLD THEM UNTIL LAUNCH.  See the screen shot here:

These represent a total of 18 quests, each of which should give 20-22k of experience at level 80.  This would conservatively give you a total turn in for 360k expr.  1,686k is required to reach level 81.  So this would put you near or past 23% of level before you do your first Cataclysm quest.  You could pick up a few others and hold for turn in, but plan out how much travel time the turn in will take and whether it is more prudent to get started on Cataclysm quests that much sooner.  Note that most Cata quests give you from 34k to 42k experience.

Stock up on mats for any profession crafting items which still offer at least yellow status.  Hold them in your bags if you have room.  You'll be able to crank out from 5 - 20 skill points using mats you can already accumulate now.  Speaking of which, go through your bag and bank inventory and toss, vendor or AH anything you have stashed away but does not make sense to keep any longer.

On the evening of Dec 6th I will go to Stormwind and set my hearth at an inn there.  I will then travel back to Northrend (some item from the tourney ports you back there I think) and park my toon at the Hodir quest hub.  When the release hits, I will: log in and turn in hodir dailies; fly to the argent tourney and turn in lots of dailies; fly to Dalaran and visit all the appropriate profession trainers; hearth back to Stormwind; get to the flight master and buy old world flying from the new NPC who should be standing near the griffins; fly into the trad district and pick up starting quests from the "Heroes Call Board"; go to the Command Center in SW and buy my first blue for when I reach 85; and finally begin working on new Cataclysm quests.

Dang Raven, that's a lotta planning you put into that.

Me? personanlly, On the 1st I'm gonna dump all my WotLK mats and from then on in, just go with the flow, more fun that way...  (Ok so maybe in the middle of november I'm gonna start splurging to get Blade his Artisian flight skill, [280% is better than 150% eh?] .

Raven! You're making me work too hard!

Wow.  thanks for the ideas, but that's *far* too organized for me to have fun, it seems like a lot of work.

I expect new quest lines will be available to us when it opens up, do they start at all the capital cities?

I helped with the plans, I did! They will work faster for me though, cause I will be throwing mage teleports into the mix, mwuahaha!

Well, that is assuming I have the time to play sufficiently while I do all these graduate school applications and essays. Ugh.

Thalex - 80 druid
Warrbird - 80 warrior (currently Horde side)
Bladebird - 80 rogue

So... what I hear is I might be able to get a toon to cap level before you? Yay for Thalex's school!

Most of the work for what I've outlined is stuff you would do between now and release.  So, in some respects it helps push back on the "boredom" as WotLK dies down.  If properly prepared, you take advantage of what you've done in the first 20-30 minutes of play and then get down to following the quest lines.

Just as a note, I queued up 24 completed quests yesterday, it took me about 3 hours.

(but I did queue up one that was at the end of a quest chain that had previously required a party to complete and I had failed at it solo.  The new disc lolsmite tore through the skull elite mob like a 60 stealing a candle from a kobold. In any case, it won't take 3 hours if you don't waste time running a quest chain.  Oh, and also logging in alts to teleport people who are too lazy to fly ;)  .)

I'll probably try to queue up the weekly raid quest for the 25th one, should get a little more exp than just a regular quest for that.

I don't think I'll bother doing more for any toon but Snow - I only ever really level them for the supporting tradeskills when I absolutely must.  Those that can heal, do!

Even if I plan on doing most of what you said Raven, I am not going to teleport to SW.  That's crazy talk man.  Take the portal in Dalaran that takes you right there.  No need to bind there in my opinion.  Even if there is, I'm not going to use my hearth to get there after learning my trade skills.  I'm walking 200 ft to the portal!

Let me make one small but time saving refinement to your master plan...

The Tabard (which ports you to Argent Tournament Grounds) has a 30 min cooldown.  By the time you wake up and turn in your Hodir dailies, there weill be no need to fly to the ATG - just port there!  There... saved you another two to three minutes...

You're welcome.

Taking away my portals is lame!  I'm going to have to keep Katie's account up and use her mage as my personal teleporter apparently, lame I say LAME.
