Using a Viewport with your UI
« on: August 05, 2008, 05:49:47 PM »
I've been recently looking at cleaning up the clutter of my UI, and I have been checking out Viewports.  I noticed that a couple of people use them in guild, and I was wondering how you like it?  It seems to me that setting up a viewport and placing all the action bar buttons at the bottom of the screen allows for an unobstructed field of view within game.  Thanks

The concept of a viewport to save space is somewhat flawed, because you could simply arrange all your mods down at the bottom of the screen without using a "viewport" type mod to shrink the viewable area.

My advice in this instance, though, is to hang on and wait for the next iteration of the PIF modset.  It's going to be a dramatic departure from the current modset, and definitely worth waiting for.

personally, i love using viewport, it gives me a blank canvas anywhere i want to work with and put stuff over it.

Here's a screenshot of my UI using a viewport.

Flamethrowers are proof that somewhere, sometime, someone thought to themselves "You see those people over there? I sure would like to set them on fire, I'm just not close enough to get the job done."

I use a collection of mods to create a rather similar look to what you can do with viewports, but I don't like shrinking the viewable area. Instead I use a mod to put down panels (of varying color and transparency) that I can then layer stuff on top of. I have very little in the 'main' area of my screen- all buttons, chat logs, and the like are at the bottom- I layer black semi-transparent panels under my chat logs to make them easier to read. My HUD sits right above that, etc. All in all, it gives a similar effect- everything organized more or less in one place, very easy to find, easy on the eyes, and it leaves most of the screen open.

Then again, my interface is probably a bit more... oriented around artistic appeal than the average interface. Function always follows form for me. I spent hours color coordinating everything. The teal blue of a shaman's health bar must match nicely with the grey-blue of a priest's, etcetera. So I'm a bit obsessed.

Here's a screenshot of my current ui on my mage.  And although it looks fairly sparse, I'm just haven't found a good way to setup autobar yet.  If I set it up centered above my main bar, then when I have a toon that has a pet, the pet bar and autobar are overlapping.  So currently I have it shifted off to the right side, which isn't very good for quick actions.  I have tried scaling autobar down some, but I haven't found that to my liking either.  I'll just have to fight with it until Kai gets the next version of the modset online.  hehe
